How to Develop a Habit and Maintain It for Life

How to Develop a Habit and Maintain it for Life

The need to integrate a new habit emerges when we want to change a situation that no longer pleases us, solve a problem, or achieve a goal. Why? Because we all know (at least intuitively) that the results we get in life are the consequence of our behaviors.

Knowing this, why talk so much about this subject? A habit is a behavior we must repeat. I apply the behavior over a specific period, and I get results. If I stop using it, I'm back to square one.

The difficulty lies in the repetition and long-term application of the habit. This explains why so many people fail to achieve their goals.

Here is what to consider and the questions to ask yourself to give a habit a chance to stay in your life.

The Trap of Emotional Motivation and Radical Decisions

When they decide to change, many people act under the influence of sudden and intense motivation. They opt for a radical transformation without real reflection, hoping for immediate results.

Under these conditions, any potential for success dissipates because there is only a short-term vision. This leads to the application of an "overdose" of the habit, which in turn leads to exhaustion and discouragement.

The Four Fundamental Questions to Ask Yourself Before Any Change

Thus, before embarking on a change process, it is essential to self-evaluate through four basic questions.

1) Am I ready to invest time?

Any profound change requires time. It is not about adding a new habit to an already busy schedule, but instead readjusting your priorities.

Without this reorganization, the behavior intended to produce the desired change will be relegated to oblivion.

There are only twenty-four hours a day, and about sixteen hours during which we are awake and can work on our behaviors. We allocate our time according to our priorities. Even if we desire different results, we will never implement the new habit if it is not part of our priorities.

2) Do I expect quick results without effort?

"Magical thinking" is a common trap. It is so easy to believe that the mere desire for change will be enough to produce immediate results. In reality, any transformation requires constant effort and a long-term vision.

The desired changes often do not manifest immediately upon adopting the new behavior. There is a latency period.

Patience and perseverance are key elements that are often lacking.

3) Have I anticipated the difficulties that might arise?

Obstacles are inevitable, and stress and doubt can compromise success. Working on oneself to develop resilience and learn to manage these challenges effectively is crucial.

Problems will always be part of the process that leads to success. We must accept this reality.

4) Am I applying the right habit?

Using popular methods does not guarantee success. It is essential to evaluate the effectiveness of the behavior and modify it if necessary.

Its impact must be measured. For example, why should I do a hundred push-ups a day if I want to run a marathon?

Opting for the right habit is also essential for success.

A Thoughtful Approach for Lasting Change

Change does not happen miraculously. It is based on thorough reflection, a well-defined strategy, and self-work. Beyond the initial motivation, we must also be willing to devote time, be patient, anticipate challenges, and choose the right habit to integrate. Only this balance allows us to achieve our goals effectively.
